Purpose
Starfront is committed to providing a secure and collaborative environment for all customers and staff. As our remote telescope network grows, it's essential to ensure that pier cameras are used responsibly and respectfully. This policy outlines the requirements and expectations for pier camera use at our facilities.
Hardware Requirements
To ensure privacy, safety, and system compatibility, pier cameras must meet the following specifications. Cameras with the following features cannot be installed:
- Internet connectivity
- IR lamp or infrared emitter
- Pan/tilt/zoom capability
- Microphone
We recommend planetary astronomy cameras as the ideal choice for pier installations—they're compact, reliable, and typically include a standard 1/4" female thread for easy mounting.
Authorized Use
Pier cameras are primarily intended for:
- Telescope operation and monitoring
- Observation and data collection
- Maintenance and troubleshooting
Incidental personal or site documentation is permitted, provided it complies with all other aspects of this policy and does not compromise staff privacy.
Privacy and Respect
Pier cameras must not be used to record, photograph, or monitor Starfront staff, technicians, or visitors without their explicit consent. Staff privacy is a core value at Starfront, and any unauthorized surveillance is strictly prohibited.
Monitoring and Enforcement
Starfront does not actively monitor camera feeds or logs. However, we do review publicly shared content (forums, Discord, social media, etc.) when brought to our attention. If inappropriate images, videos, or discussions involving pier cameras are reported, we will investigate and take appropriate action.
Violations of this policy may result in:
- Camera disconnection
- Restrictions on remote access
- Termination of services
Reporting Concerns
If you observe inappropriate pier camera use, please report it to our support team immediately via ticket or Discord. We take all reports seriously and will investigate promptly.
Getting Approval for Non-Standard Cameras
If your camera doesn't meet these specifications but you believe it's suitable for your application, please contact support for pre-approval before shipping. We're happy to review your specific use case.
Summary
This policy exists to protect everyone—our staff, our facilities, and your experience with Starfront. We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a safe, respectful, and professional environment.
