Overview
The Deep Sky Dad (DSD) FLAP Flat Panel can be used with the ZWO ASIAIR to open and close the panel, control illumination, and adjust brightness for flat frames.
Unlike native ZWO accessories, the FLAP is not controlled through a dedicated ASIAIR driver. Instead, it uses a special control cable that interprets the ASIAIR's 12V DC power outputs as control signals.
Requirements
- Deep Sky Dad FLAP Flat Panel
- Deep Sky Dad ASIAIR Control Cable
- Updated FLAP firmware (see Deep Sky Dad documentation)
- Two available 12V DC outputs on your ASIAIR (Plus or Pro)
If both DC outputs are already in use, consider powering other accessories (cameras, mount, dew heaters) through a Pegasus Powerbox or similar device to free up the required ports.
How It Works
The control cable connects to two 12V DC outputs on the ASIAIR. The FLAP responds to the state of those outputs as follows:
| DC Output 1 | DC Output 2 | Action |
|---|---|---|
| ON | OFF | Open FLAP (imaging position) |
| OFF | ON | Close FLAP (dust cover) |
| ON | ON | Flat panel illuminated |
| OFF | OFF | Power off |
Note: Exact behavior may vary depending on FLAP firmware version.
The ASIAIR's power output brightness slider controls the LED brightness of the flat panel, allowing you to adjust illumination for different filters and optical systems.
Typical Workflow
Before Imaging
- Connect to your ASIAIR
- Open the FLAP using the appropriate DC output
- Verify the telescope has a clear view of the sky
- Begin your imaging plan
Taking Flats
- Close the FLAP over the telescope
- Turn on the flat panel illumination
- Adjust brightness using the ASIAIR power output slider
- Run the ASIAIR Flat Wizard
Limitations
Automatic FLAP deployment during imaging plans is not currently supported. You will need to manually open or close the panel at the appropriate time.
Troubleshooting
FLAP Does Not Respond
- Confirm the Deep Sky Dad ASIAIR control cable is installed
- Verify the FLAP firmware has been updated per Deep Sky Dad instructions
- Check that both DC cables are connected to the correct ASIAIR outputs
Brightness Does Not Change
- Confirm you are adjusting the ASIAIR power output brightness slider
- Verify your FLAP firmware version supports ASIAIR brightness control
Both Power Ports Are Already in Use
The FLAP requires two available ASIAIR DC outputs. Use a Pegasus Powerbox or similar power distribution device to power other accessories and free the required ports.
